INGA

The INGA hydro-electric facility, the DRC’s largest producer of electrical power, had originally been commissioned in the early 1980’s, and years of low maintenance have resulted in the site currently delivering only 20% of installed capacity. With growing demand for electrical power in the region and throughout Africa, MagEnergy has a significant opportunity to generate a growing stream of cash flow through our contract to receive a portion of power sales once the facility is refurbished.

Today INGA currently consists of two stations, INGA I (6 turbines of 52 MW each) and Inga II (8 turbines of 178 MW each), for a total installed potential of 1774 MW. Due to years of low demand and low maintenance budgets INGA I and II currently produce only about 360 MW.

The next stage of development at INGA is known as INGA 3 and is under consideration by WESTCOR, a joint venture which includes the governments of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa. INGA 3 is expected to have a capacity of 3500 megawatts and to be in production by 2013. The WESTCOR Project has now focused international attention on the INGA site which will also lead to increased stability and security. The final stage of INGA is known as Grand INGA and is currently conceptualized at about 40,000 megawatts.
